Filing status-US taxes. What's the difference between filing married, but separate and filing joint?

Is there a specific benefit to filing as one or the other? We have no children, so is there a benefit to doing one or the other?Filing status-US taxes. What's the difference between filing married, but separate and filing joint?
Generally, married filing separate will be more costly taxwise than filing jointly. The only time it is more beneficial is if one person earns much, much more than the other person. You can prepare your return both ways and see which results in the lower overall tax. If you look at the tax tables/tax brackets, and the standard deduction, married filing separate is half of what married filing jointly is.
