I want to get married without doing the whole church thing. How do I do this?

My fiance want to get married but we don't want the big church type thing. We just want to do the legal part of it and then have a reception afterward. What do we need to do this. I know we need to go to the court house and apply for a marriage license but then what? Where do we go to sign the papers? We live in Pennsylvania if that matters. I want to get married without doing the whole church thing. How do I do this?
get married in court.or vegas.I want to get married without doing the whole church thing. How do I do this?
You go to the Clerk of Court and apply for the license. You take your license to whomever you want to marry you, and they sign it after the wedding, along with 2 witnesses. After the wedding, you or the officiant takes the license back to the Clerk's office and they file it. You will get your original marriage certificate in the mail. That is the only legal thing you need to do to get married. As long as you have the license and someone authorized to marry you, you can get married anywhere. You can get married at the courthouse by the magistrate and have the reception afterwards...the clerk should be able to help you get that set up.
When you go to get your marriage license, ask them about the details of getting a justice of the peace set up to do it. You can get married in the courthouse or even arrange to get married at a spot of your choice. You can also have a close friend or family member go online and get ordained to officiate weddings and they can perform your wedding whereever you would like. In most states, you need two witnesses to sign the marriage license with you to say that yes-you guys had it ';officiated'; and it was within the time constrictions. (most states as well also allow you to apply for the marriage license up to one year in advance.) If you have any other questions feel free to email me or IM me. Over the last few years i have become a pro at this type of thing due to several close friends getting married as well as myself. I planned my whole wedding starting in october and got married in March of the following year.....all for only 3500. It was cheap (considering the avg cost of a wedding is about 25K) and it was fast, but it didn't look like it.
When you go to apply for a marriage license they should give you the paperwork. You have a certain amount of time before it expires to have it signed by a pastor or preacher and sent back in to be legalized. If you have any questions ask them there and they should be able to tell you. You can actually look in the phone book in the yellow pages for justice of the peace or pastors in your area.
I do not know if there are different laws for Pennsylvania, but me and my husband are not religious people. We were married in a park by my Grandmother (she is an ordained minister, but she was ordained over the internet in a 10 minute process. If you know someone willing to do this it is worth doing, then someone who really knows you and respects your wishes marries you.). She had all the paperwork already, you don't have to go to the court until after the ceremony to file because you need all your paperwork with the minister's signature and the witnesses signatures. Whoever marries you will have everything you will need up to that point, then you just go to the court house after the wedding. It really meant a lot to us that we were able to marry under our own terms, with our own beliefs. Good luck, I hope you have a beautiful wedding.
I got married in PA in August. Our wedding was outdoors and officiated by one of those 'internet ordained' ministers that has all the lawmakers in PA all angry these days. He's a friend of ours. We're both atheists.

After the ceremony, we had our guy fill out his part of the marriage license and send it in. We put something really generic sounding for 'denomination' on the license.

Within a couple weeks we got our marriage thing back saying that we were officially married. It worked.

Basically, it's effectively impossible for the state government to decide what makes a 'legitimate' minister for a large number of reasons ranging from constitutionality to the fact that it's really just not logistically feasible to draw up regulations that apply to all religions.

So just do whatever you want to do. It'll work out. I played minister to two of my friends about a year ago and that one worked, too.
Wow. That is a question i ask myself sometime.

So your like me. you don't want a big wedding, but you want to have a wedding. And i would say to have a nice back yard wedding.

That is what i'm going to be doing.

To me a giant wedding is just ridiculous and it costs to much.

Mention a backyard wedding to your other and see how she likes it...and if she loves you enough she will like any wedding church or back yard.

OH! and if you do it in a backyard or in a field. i would trying to get a really pretty one.

XD

good luck
A lot of people in your situation just go to the local county courthouse, (I would call first to see what they require you bring), sign the papers in front of a judge and its done. You may need to make an appointment (which is why I would call first).

Then you can send out invitations as to when and where you are holding your reception. Its quite easy to be honest. AND so much cheaper. Good Luck and Congrats!!
a clergy man/woman can do it outside of the church - OR- you can see a judge or a magistrate. Probably a mayor or the governor will be recognized to perform this ceremony as well. Perhaps even a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace. -OR- go to a hospital or other institution and find the Chaplin.
It's your wedding and you are entitled to do it any way you want and you can get a Justice of the Peace or even a clergy to go anywhere you want. JP is the best way to do it nonreligously. There are also people ordained in other ways (internet) and you can probably find them in your area by searching ordained ministers (I think is what they are called).
Get the license, ask the justice what time he is able to marry you, (pick a date) invite the witnesses, and DO IT! The witnesses sign the license, the justice files a copy and its a done deal...Wear what you want, flowers if you want, just the cost of the license and the fee that the justice may charge...
Justice of the peace marriage.

You go to the courthouse and get the license and you sign it there.

Then the justice of the peace signs the papers and then sends them in and you get it back within a few weeks. Thats all there is to it.

Congrats on the engagement.
We got married by a judge (family friend) at the VFW hall, where we then had the reception. We had to pick up our marriage license at the town hall after the fact, but we signed everything with the judge on the day of the service. This was New York State. May be different in PA. Congratulations!
Do it like I did. My husband and I hired a man who could legally do the ceremony and sign our marriage license. He is a man who works with our brother-in-law. Then, we had and ourdoor wedding in plain clothes at our local national park. It was fun.
There are Justices of the Peace, regular judges of the court system who can and do perform marriage ceremonies without the'; whole church thing';. The City or Town clerk's office should have all the information you require.
You can marry anywhere you want. you need a permit for an outside wedding...depending on where it is. Hiring a minister is no problem...The rest is up to you! weddings don't have to be complicated, people make them that way.
After getting the license, find a local J.P. to perform the ceremony. Or, you can have a pastor come to your home for something simple.

In Texas, you don't need any witnesses.
a friend of mine was married by a friend of hers. he got his minister license on the internet. if you do it this way, you can get anyone you want to marry you two.
You should be able to make an appointment and have your mayor (or whatever city official you have) perform a quick and simple ceremony. Call city hall to ask.
Take a nice trip down south, Caribean area, and get married there. Honeymoon and marriage all in one. They sell packages.
You can sign the papers right there in Town Hall, as long as you bring a witness along with you.
You can get married in houses or receptions you can sign the papers there, i think?

The clerk of the court is usually empowered as a Justice of the Peace to do civil marriages.
Kill 2 birds with one stone and get married in Vegas and have a honeymoon. And if the marriage doesn't work out remember : What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas
Have someone you know and love get ordained online. It's super cool and ';church free';.

We got married in my parents yard and a friend of mine did it. It was neat.

you can make an appointment at the same time to marry right there in the court it is usually nice
While you're getting the license ask them. There should be a place at or near the court house.
Why would anyone want to get married?

With the divorce rate so high, I suggest marriage classes first, believe me when I say.......love is not enough!
court marriage
In a registry office, you just need 3 witnesses
Sign the papers? You have to get someone to marry you first. Then you sign the papers. She should be deciding how the wedding goes...not you!
